Part of the reason that cars look similar is safety requirements and aerodynamic constraints - things like the European NCAP rating require certain proportions of A-Frame, bonnet (hood) and boot (trunk) length, rear window size and a bunch of other things.

Couple that with the mechanical requirements of having to have dual-mode transmission, batteries and a KERS (Kinetic Energy Retrieval System) like on hybrids and that's the reason why stuff ends up looking similar.

It's not just low end cars - stuff like the Aston Martin DB9 and the Maseratti Quatraporte look pretty similar for much the same reason.
